When Rep. Laurel Libby launched her “Legal Defense Fund,” thousands of small-dollar donors were told they were supporting a brave stand for free speech. But 78% of those donations never touched legal fees.

Fundraising Through Fiction
“Help me fight back!” That was the public message. But behind the scenes, PAC disclaimers revealed: no funds were required to be spent on legal defense. The fundraising was legally shielded, emotionally manipulative, and financially redirected.
Coordinated Outrage for Profit
- Libby’s donation spikes lined up with appearances on Fox News, Newsmax, and posts from right-wing influencers.
- She framed her ethics censure—triggered by doxxing a trans student, as a free speech violation.
- Meanwhile, PACs like The Dinner Table PAC raised over $147,000… and failed to account for over $132,000.
The Receipts
PACs were misreporting donors’ occupations. Ethics violations were ignored. Donation pages used emotionally charged appeals that contradicted their legal disclaimers. This wasn’t grassroots. This was donor manipulation cloaked in conservative martyrdom.
Why It Matters
This is a repeatable playbook. And it’s being used right now in every state:
- Manufacture a cultural crisis
- Launch a “fundraiser for justice.”
- Pocket the outrage money through PACs
- Move on to the next firestorm
